Dear TDs and Senators,
I am writing to you in relation to the Adoption (Information and Tracing) Bill 2019, and in particular, the four ‘Options for a Legislative Pathway’ recently circulated by Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone, TD.
Irish adopted people deserve nothing less than full access to their birth certificates and records, just like every other citizen. They deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and not as a threat to the privacy of natural mothers.
Options 1 and 2 would introduce a system that completely discriminates against adopted people. I ask you as TDs and Senators to please help ensure that neither of these pathways are acted upon. I urge you to please vote against Options 1 and 2.
Instead, I am asking you to support Option 3, with the caveats set out by Adoption Rights Alliance in their letter to the Minister, which I understand you have a copy of. Option 3 does not afford equal rights to adopted people, however, neither does it discriminate against them in the way that Options 1 and 2 would.
Finally, adopted people, natural family members, others affected by so-called historical abuses and their supporters are not going away. Ireland needs to deal with its legacy of human rights violations against women and children once and for all, and access to records is fundamental to this. We ask you as legislators to stand shoulder to shoulder with us.
